If you take ‘retrieve’ to mean brining to mind chunks of information, then sure. And some ‘retrieval’ activities are about this. But I retrieval can be about calling forth understanding, which is malleable and open to further shaping during the activity. The meaning of the word is in its use.

I believe the word's meaning is in perception rather than use; the listener decides the meaning. In other words, it seems you don't perceive the meaning of retrieval in the sense I have mentioned. But due to computer metaphors (used in CLT for example) other meanings emerge and exist in people.
