Gave today's keynote at the 25th Conference on Ethics Across the Curriculum hosted by Clemson University. My talk was "On Truth, Values, Knowledge, & Democracy in the Age of Generative 'AI,'" & we discussed All that plus great questions around needing to fundamentally shift "AI" education & training
1. Of all the potential harms, academicsâ consistent fixation on student âplagiarismâ as the main worry is weird. 2. People keep confusing âfasterâ with âbetter.â Good writing, thinking, drafting, and revising are not necessarily things that are improved by being done quickly.
An effect of the new technology âdoesnât have to be the removalâ of teachers from the classroom
One of my least favourite academic grifts is the âunquestioningly and shallowly champion new technology immediately while dismissing everyone else as turgid slow-brains who are afraid of changeâ aka the wannabe-techbro, but at 0.5% of the salary.
"LLMs must become a core part of the educational experience.... This imperative grows with each new development in text, image, and voice generation â even the potential for AI-driven lessons delivered by simulated celebrities." Uurrgghh. (And what about environmental damage of this proposal?)
The essay assessment is only the most obvious casualty of generative AI. Janice Kay, Chris Husbands and Jason Tangen explain why AI should prompt a total overhaul of education strategies

From the AAUP: "The transparent purposes of the questions being considered by the trustees are to restrict legitimate, long-established areas of study, to silence and punish speech with which trustees disagree, and to turn back the clock on gains in diversity and equity."

I highly recommend attending Black Panther events (celebrating 57 years!) before conference sessions on equity and inclusion. Excellent perspective setting. Constant affirmation that the work ahead is a struggle & worth doing & others have sacrificed so, so much for us to continue to do the work.
