Soliciting ideas for how to build an inclusive practice of appointing associate editors for scientific journals -- if you have experience or ideas, please share! If you serve as an Associate Editor (or Subject Matter Editor, etc) for a journal -- how did you get that position?

Was talking with editor on an unrelated topic and asked for advice on how to join a board. She invited me then.

I joined L&O Letters at the outset when Pat Soranno was getting it up & running. She was very proactive in seeking recommendations with an eye on diversity in geography, career stage, expertise, etc. Jim Cloern has followed her lead and actively seeks recommendations from the current board.

When I was EIC I would 1) start by searching the pool of our past reviewers for people with a database record of thorough & thoughtful & on-time reviews. Problem is, this pushes the issue of inclusion onto the AEs who choose reviewers. 2) search DiversifyEEB database 3) solicit suggestions from AEs

I was an AE for the Journal of Ecology (BES) for a few years. I found out about it through an open call made on Twitter. Once they'd staffed everyone the did a nice introduction series on their SM platforms and in their quarterly newsletter. Also, some onboarding training that really helped!
