The Guimarota taxon was originally named "Theriosuchus guimarotae", later revised to 𝘒𝘯𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘬𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘦. The genus was erected in 2017, based on specimens from the Langenberg quarry.

This dinosaur was first discovered in the Andrés quarry in 1988, and it provided the first evidence of 𝘈𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 outside North America. More field work, in 2010, uncovered the extraordinary cranial remains, which were carefully prepared and studied by paleontologist Elisabete Malafaia.
