Nice piece about ā€œFree to Be You & Meā€ and its impact, particularly on Gen X. I will say that it was a significant part of my childhood. Iā€™m glad to see people talking about it. I still have that scratched up record. šŸŽ§ www.nytimes.com/2024/03/09/a...

What ā€œFree to Beā€ really told us carousel kids, though, was not just that women could have businesses or that boys could have Barbies. It was that no one else had the right to tell you who you are. This paired a deeply American statement of individualism with a universal kidsā€™ declaration: Youā€™re not the boss of me.

Most of this material was already available on the album version of ā€œFree to Be.ā€ But putting the project on ABC prime-time gave it to everyone. My blue-collar small town did not have a ton of Ms. subscribers, but we watched ā€œFree to Beā€ on elementary school movie days. It was, like ā€œSchoolhouse Rock,ā€ part of our pop-culture curriculum.

"Instead of making one $200 million movie, try making twenty $10 million movies" may end up being the line of the night.

Sports illustrated is gone, the messenger imploded, vice is toast, and Google is removing its news tab that was already littered with AI articles. Itā€™s hard not to see this all as a broad based attack on all journalism

One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of forms of regulation of recreational sex and birth control would/will be largely broken-taillight-type laws. By which I mean when you create a law you canā€™t possibly really enforce, itā€™s just a blanket power to selectively harass people you donā€™t like.

Any company that lays off more than 3% of its workforce while profitable should also be legally required to lay off its entire c-suite, who should be legally barred from collecting anything more than the same severance as the laid off workers

The bottom line with the LA Times is that the reporters and editors can't fix the bottom line. That is supposed to be the business side. You can't write your way into a great ad package. Yet the writers and editors are the ones being laid off.

If you follow me, you know what Iā€™m about to say. A majority. That cannot agree. On a Speaker. Is functionally. Not. A majority.
